AFL Doppelgängers: an open letter (Port 72 - 58 Richmond)

An attempt to bring aid and relief for the suffering we may have caused to our beloved brothers from across the border.

Dear Richmond barrackers,

I know it is difficult to understand what you just experienced, but since I have passed through a similar situation last year, I may help you cope with your pain. This is simply how playing against your team feels like. Not good, right?

We beat you fairly in the first half, applying forward pressure, playing contested footy, and moving the ball fast into attack. Then, in the second half, as you adjusted to stop our offense (we were leading by 23 points), we gladly accepted your invitation to slow the game down, play the ball to the ground, and go for the contest.

 You see, we know how to play like this as much as you do. The fact is that you capitulated in halftime. We were leading, and the game was never on the line after the second quarter.[1]

 You won the final half, indeed, by 9 points. However, we still had 8 scoring shots against your 7 (1.7:13 - 3.4:22). You decided to waste time and protect your percentage. We saw it and thankfully took the win and the points. Much obliged!

In brief, you just got out-Richmond'ed (or Port'ed, which is the same) by your doppelgänger - in the same way that we were out-Port'ed (or Richmond'ed, which is also the same) by you last season. By the way, that game against us initiated your run to the Grand Final and the title. Hopefully, we can experience a similar fate this season.

If it happens that we meet again later on, it is most probable that your line-up and our form will be both different. Still, the game will be pretty much like the previous encounters: identical twins trying to out-self the other.

The ground will not make any difference.

“Decipher me, or I’ll devour you” —It’s derby week, and nobody knows what to expect from Port Adelaide.
