THE BEHIND POSTS [II.03] (Showdown Edition)

This week, in “The Behind Posts:” SPP’s indigenous guernsey, the Showdown, and some more...

2019 Indigenous Guernsey

Fantastic work by SPP! Great guernsey!
How about the inclusion of the PRISON BARS?! He only mentions "the members and fans" as being represented by those white lines, but he is fooling no one there. I am in love, really!

It may be weird ME of all people to be saying this, but SPP has just shown that he knows what Port is and how to represent it. SPP may experience the club better than many people at the top of our hierarchy.

Is the Showdown Dying?

The rivalry won't go anywhere. Every round, we barrack for two teams: ours, and whoever plays against the rival. One just needs to look both fora in BigFooty to realize that.

The issue preceding THIS SPECIFIC SHOWDOWN is that both supporting bases are disenchanted with their own teams. However, when there is that moment of silence, when even the air stands still, right before the opening bounce, the rivalry will reach "flashpoint" as usual.

Is it Saturday yet?

Feeding the Croll before the Showdown

Some Crow, out of the blue, decided to go to Port’s forum in BigFooty and make this comment: “
You aren't a true grass roots club, seriously. Those are clubs which have juniors and really rely on the community and volunteers to build a fabric in the club. Real true grass roots clubs, much to your disgust, are clubs like Glenelg, Norwood, Sturt, etc.

I don’t like to feed Crolls, but I couldn’t resist:

“So, let me see if I understand your point.
You are saying that because we became so successful that now we have great sponsors and supporters worldwide, and due the fact that we were FORCED to give up UNWILLINGLY our zones by a bunch of JEALOUS true grassroots LOSERS, we lost the label of ‘true grass roots club’ that we held for more than century. That, regardless of all our voluntary and community work, our clubhouse, and our praise, respect, and zeal for our History and those who wrote it and have passed it down to us. Is this your point?

The SANFL is full of ‘true grass roots clubs.’ I don’t deny that. We still play them, even (although, not in the way we wanted to). However, we simply now play also against better ‘true grass roots clubs’ from Melbourne. We are the only ‘true grass roots club’ from outside Victoria to do that.

The AFL is composed by 13 traditional clubs and 5 new franchises. 10 clubs are based in Victoria; 1, in NSW; 1, in QLD; and 1, in SA. Brisbane's team is old Fitzroy; Sidney's, South Melbourne. Only one traditional club is not from the VFL: Port Adelaide.

West Lakes is SA's equivalent of Gold Coast and GWS.

Sliding Doors

Showdown at the ‘G?’ Hmmm… How about on a Saturday afternoon in September?

Tomayto, Tomahto

"Fun-tah-ZEE-ah" is the Portuguese pronunciation of “Fantasia.”

Gratuitous Hit

In most places, the
supporters know every player on their team’s list. In Gold Coast is different.
The players on the Suns' list know everyone of their supporters.

On Rules, the AFL, and God [no, Gill, I am not taking about you]
Rules need interpretation. Period. God could have made the world differently, but He didn't. We are stuck with what there is, including the fact that rules must be interpreted. The issue is that AFL sucks at setting, interpreting, and applying the rules.

On Traffic Tickets as Legal Extortion

It is a worldwide disease. It is not only in Victoria. When I was in the US, not long ago, I listened on the radio an interview with a DC councilman. He argued that the District needed to install more cameras because people were driving better, and the revenue had shrunk!

I couldn't believe it. We all know that's the case, but there was no effort to hide it. I was even more pissed because the reporter interviewing him simply accepted the argument. There was no follow-up. The obvious question was never asked: "So, the goal of traffic control is collecting revenue. Is that it?"

On Soccer

Anyone that says "I understand soccer" is a compulsive liar.
