THE BEHIND POSTS [II.04] (Miscellaneous)

This week in “The Behind Posts:” a logo and a mascot for 2020; AFL umpires and the MRO; Port’s identity; and the Showdown.

A NEW LOGO FOR PORT?

In our quest for an identity, the main question is how we save our great past by connecting it to our bad recent past, our present, and our future. There is no turning back the clock. We cannot deny that 1997-2018 has happened, and its now part of the Port Adelaide Football Club. We cannot deny our situation in 2019. We must act considering everything or we will fail.

We don't need to give up our past. We should fight for our heritage unrelentlessly. However, we are not independent. We need to convince people. We need recover our bond with our great past in a way that is acceptable for those who actually decide upon these sort of stuff. We need something that allow us to fight for our heritage without fading, without breaking; i.e., something that is already strongly bonded to it, but not overtly enough to call much attention.

We need a Trojan horse.
Now, I am not good at drawing. Someone more talented than me can make a better job than the one I did. The final product is irrelevant. I am more interested on the premises.

When I wrote a post on our identity, I was trying to point a direction. I was aiming at our beginning, something that could give us a sense of "foundation" and allow us moving forward. I was focusing on unity, something that could give us a sense of "togetherness" and allow us embracing diversity and expanding our brand.

I wanted something that could simultaneously fit into: (a) 1870 and our glorious SANFL past; (b) 1997 and our move to the AFL; (c) 2010 and the "One Club" movement; (d) 2015 and our community work and Chinese endeavor; and (e) beyond and anything that we might do from now on.

The "Port Adelaide 1870" black-and-white roundel was the closest I could get of that which I was seeking. We would be able to fill it in with anything for any purpose without losing our identity ever.

A NEW POWERFUL MASCOT
Looking at the Power logo, I firmly advise us to
embrace the mightiness and the immortality of Zeus/Jupiter. I have no idea why we don't explore this symbol more. It is already there! The symbolism of Zeus/Jupiter fits the message within NTUA and what we want to achieve as a club in the AFL. He was a first among equals; ruler of both gods and men. Zeus/Jupiter should be the Power’s mascot. How great would it be?!

AN ‘UMPEROR’ DOES WHATEVER HE WANTS
Rockliff was complaining about calls on tackles. He believes there should be more calls for “holding the ball” and “illegal disposal.” Dropping the ball has, indeed, been considered legal disposal for a while now, but umpires are still calling HTB absolutely randomly. In brief, dropping is legal, until it isn't. Once in a while, an umpire calls HTB or "incorrect disposal" for it. Even though, he hasn't called it before and don't call it after.

Umpiring is an issue in every single pro sport league in the world. I get that. However, the AFL is the worst one dealing with the issue from those I have seen. The consistent inconsistency of AFL umpires makes it really hard for anyone to understand and to follow the rules.

Rocky wants to promote tackling. It is fine. The league wants a more fluid game. It is also fine. Umpires should be free to choose one way or the other. Just keep the interpretation constant and call it fairly for both teams during a particular game (the crew must be on the same page). Do that, and everything will be OK.

AN ‘UMPEROR’ DOES WHATEVER HE WANTS (2)

The Sydney-Essendon match finished in controversy. Besides the protest from the Bombers, nothing was called when Dane Rampe climbed a goal post when Essendon had a set shot after siren with the game on the line. Moreover, there was no report against Rampe, and he suffered no penalty from the MRO.

It can be argued that the umpires and the MRO acted well, but I personally think that it wasn't the best interpretation of the rules.
 Looking at the Laws of the Game, there is no rule against climbing the posts. Hence, the case is not clear-cut.

Still, I believe that the umpires should have applied these rules: 18.1; 18.2-f; 17.12-g. Thus, they should have called a fifty-meter penalty against Rampe for misconduct — unsportsmanlike behavior (attempt to gain unfair advantage) delaying the play. He also has put his own safety and of others in risk while breaking the law.

The conduct could also be considered as a reportable offense, under 21.2.2-y; and/or 21.2.2-cc. Rampe should have been reported and fined for climbing the goal post.

UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES
Ablett went with his elbow against an opponent’s head and got away with. He did again last week. How surprising… Still, he got away with again! It is going to rain elbows on heads this week. It is going to be as dangerous as fun...

THE SHOWDOWN STILL HURTS
Port has a slogan ("
We are Port Adelaide"), a motto ("We exist to win premierships and make our community proud"), a statement ("Any club worth its salt will clean out its no-hopers..."), and 'The Creed' ("We, the Players and Management of the Port Adelaide Football Club, accept the heritage which players and administrators have passed down to us..."). They were supposed to serve as guidelines for everybody within the club. They should be the ground for our identity as a football community.

However, as everything Ports nowadays, they are all full of controversies: (a) the motto has been changed to be more than “win premierships;” (b) nobody can agree on the meaning of “Port Adelaide” on the slogan; (c) the club officials seem to be a bunch of no-hopers against which the statement was written; and (d) they also seem to be those disregarding The Creed the most.

It doesn't help the fact that we have played one final game and won one Showdown since the beginning of 2015. It is also bad that right after our worst Showdown loss and being kicked out of finals at home, we extended the coach's contract; worse, this very coach lead to a historically ridiculous debacle the next season. However, the club acts as if everything is fine.

THE SHOWDOWN STILL HURTS (2)

Someone has asked on Reddit: “
What are some of the lessons learned from the Showdown that we can takeaway for next week and the remainder of the season?

My reply:
- Kicking goals is good; behinds, not so much;
- Inside-50 only matters when you score goals;
- A strong target down forward can be really useful;
- We can beat West Lakes, even with all our injuries;
- AJ shouldn't have played;
- Play Frampton!

MEANWHILE, AT THE SELECTION MEETING
— Ken, our current forward set-up is not working...

— I know. I know!
— Perhaps, we should try something different.
— Shoot me your idea. We have been making changes for a while now, but it is not improving. When we think it is beginning to turn around, it reverts back to type. What can we do to fix this for good?
— We could try Frampton...
— OK... But who would come out?
— I was thinking Motlop. Still, we could give Drew a rest, if we want to keep Motlop's experience on the side.
— But that would completely change our forward set-up!
— Ken, our current forward set-up is not working...
— I know. I know!

— Perhaps, we should...
