Better Late Than Never (Port 89 - 51 Suns)

Image
It has been a busy time, but that is not an excuse. This week was the first time I didn't published on the blog. It has hurt me more than it should. This is how motivated I am with our team at the moment. I would love to understand what is going on, but people better than me seem also clueless. What can I do? Here, my comments on the game against GC, the season so far, and some ideas on the Magpies. The recap on the Hawks will come next, eventually. --- Port won. After 2.5 quarters of struggle, our team finally imposed itself over the Suns and got a comfortable victory. It was our best win by percentage this season. It was also our 10 th consecutive victory over the Suns, the first time we managed such a streak since joining the AFL. No one got injured or suspended. Ok. That’s the full recap. Now, onto Tasmania and the Hawks. Living Up to the Standards Round 9 marks the end of the first part of the season for me. We have finished it with a 5-4 record; one fewer win...

THE BEHIND POSTS [II.04] (Miscellaneous)

Image
This week in “The Behind Posts:” a logo and a mascot for 2020; AFL umpires and the MRO; Port’s identity; and the Showdown. --- A NEW LOGO FOR PORT? In our quest for an identity, the main question is how we save our great past by connecting it to our bad recent past, our present, and our future. There is no turning back the clock. We cannot deny that 1997-2018 has happened, and its now part of the Port Adelaide Football Club. We cannot deny our situation in 2019. We must act considering everything or we will fail. We don't need to give up our past. We should fight for our heritage unrelentlessly. However, we are not independent. We need to convince people. We need recover our bond with our great past in a way that is acceptable for those who actually decide upon these sort of stuff. We need something that allow us to fight for our heritage without fading, without breaking; i.e., something that is already strongly bonded to it, but not overtly enough to call much attenti...

Feeling Deflated (Showdown XLVI: Port 68 - 88 West Lakes)

Image
Unfortunately, Port didn't play well, and the result was bad. Still, I would like to thanks  Jason K ,  Janus ,  TimTime , and all others who took their time and effort to help me watch the game. I have no words that could express my feelings for it.  --- PREFACE On Friday evening, wife, kids, and I took the night bus to Porto Alegre [ which, by the way, is absurdly expensive – for fewer than half of the cost, we can get a similar bus to Buenos Aires ] for Mother's Day. The game was already on when we arrived eight hours later. I started listen to the game while still on the bus. I was able to watch it from the 2nd part of Q2 onwards, already at my in-laws. It wasn’t pretty. I really wanted to show my kids an amazing Port win, but I couldn’t invite them to watch the game with me. It was that bad. To make things worse, my kids knew something was wrong. They would just look at me staring at the phone and say, from time to time: “ We are losing, ...

THE BEHIND POSTS [II.03] (Showdown Edition)

This week, in “The Behind Posts:” SPP’s indigenous guernsey, the Showdown, and some more... --- 2019 Indigenous Guernsey Fantastic work by SPP! Great guernsey!  How about the inclusion of the PRISON BARS?! He only mentions " the members and fans " as being represented by those white lines, but he is fooling no one there.   I am in love, really! It may be weird ME of all people to be saying this, but SPP has just shown that he knows what Port is and how to represent it. SPP may experience the club better than many people at the top of our hierarchy.  ---- Is the Showdown Dying? The rivalry won't go anywhere. Every round, we barrack for two teams: ours, and whoever plays against the rival. One just needs to look both fora in BigFooty to realize that. The issue preceding THIS SPECIFIC SHOWDOWN is that both supporting bases are disenchanted with their own teams. However, when there is that moment of silence, when even the air stands still, right before the opening boun...

Doom and Gloom (Port 69 - 108 Collingwood)

Image
Sorry for another delay! Port doesn't play. I don't write. Showdown is right around the corner, and we play like THAT?! I was really mad after last week's game, and I am still disappointed. No surprise I'm having a writer's block. Still, I am in this for the good and the bad. So, I am goingo to write a couple of things. --- I have only listened the game, so I may be wrong about this. We didn't play in the first quarter against Collingwood, but reacted well in Q2.  Then, Rozee opened Q3 with a goal, putting us 18 points behind Collingwood. After that, however,  they outscored us 5.5:35 to ONE before we scored a goal again. I wonder whether  our reaction had been nothing but an illusion. It does look like t hey simply stepped on the gas again, dominating us whenever they wanted to. That is not a good sign at all. Dixon is out. I get that. But having Ryder and Hoff to replace him doesn't make sense. After all, neither would be out once Dixon is back in. The ...

THE BEHIND POSTS [II.02] (Wife's Birthday Edition)

Image
Today's my wife birthday. I hope Port can give her four points as a gift. It would be a nice touch, wouldn't it? I also would like to thank the AFL for scheduling this game on Friday morning, so I can give my wife all the attention she deserves for the rest of the day and the weekend. Still, I am presenting you this week's The Behind Posts. ----   GAME BANNER It is a silly paraphrase, but I couldn't resist. It could be our banner, though, couldn't it? THEY MAY TAKE AWAY OUR STRIPES, BUT THEY WILL NEVER TAKE OUR FOOTBALL!!! ---- TALKING ABOUT STRIPES... Allowing us to wear the Prison Bars every opening home game, ANZAC round, Showdown, and home Finals (but v Collingwood) would be a good compromise — a first compromise, I mean. For tonight, I would use it as our warm-up kit. The reactions would totally make the prank worthy! ---- P.T.S.D. The Docklands triggers my Port Traumatic Stress Disorder. I'm not comfortable at all. I may need to Irish my mo...

The Curious Case of Hinklemyn Butken (Port 88 - 72 North)

Image
"The more things change the more they stay the same." It doesn't matter the way you look at it, the cycle of life keeps repeating itself at Alberton. ---- Ken Hinkley has said that our victory against North was a “ significant performance .” According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the main sense for significant is “having meaning.” Among the synonyms for significant are “meaningful” and “revealing.” Then, considering Kenny’s own statement, what could our performance have meant or, even better, have revealed? In many ways, our game against North last Friday was a bastard sibling of our win over the Eagles. In both games, we have started dominant from start up to the beginning of Q3; they reacted; we stopped them; they came harder again up to the end, but the victory margin only went down because we couldn’t kick goals. The main difference is that we were worse this week than the previous one – and that is why we are all feeling bad after a win. However, ...
